Welcome!
Welcome to The Personal Finance Project (or “PFP” for short). I am truly grateful for your attendance.
Where do I begin?
I created The PFP to provide practical financial tools and education to those of us who are beginning to take personal financial responsibility into our own hands.
I really cant emphasize the practical aspect enough.
Using the PFP Template, you can immediately engage with the content by applying new concepts to your own finances. No click-bait headlines, and no market speculation… just pure education and application.
Really, the project is exploratory for both of us. I imagine many of you are curious about what there is to learn, and what direction to head in. Frankly, I am curious about the same things. I ask myself, “do readers find value in my content?” and “who are my readers, and what more do they want to learn?”. I have joined the Substack community to explore these questions by sharing my content with all of you. I am looking forward to seeing how I can fine-tune my work and accurately target my efforts to provide value seeking readers with what they desire.
History
I have been keen on practicing financial responsibility since my first (real) job at 15 years old. My brother and I spent our teenage years designing templates that categorized our cashflows and, most importantly, were easy to use. Over the past 7+ years, the teachings from design are embodied in the PFP Financial Tracker.
A huge shift came in my first year of business studies at Wilfrid Laurier Univeristy in Waterloo, Canada. I quickly took to the concepts of cashflows, budgeting, investing and debt - specifically from a personal finance lens. I understood the importance of budgeting in light of the oncoming student debt I knew I would soon be holding. Navigating my short-term financial decisions demanded that I start budgeting, which gave birth to the PFP Budget Table.
The summer of 2021 was my first (failed) attempt at sharing my financial tools and education with others. I went back to the drawing board and redesigned the whole idea with better templates and different delivery. In August 2022 I began sending financial education newsletters to my friends using Mailchimp, with the focus on developing my writers voice and establishing a solid foundation of content.
Present
Coming to Substack embodies a slight shift in focus. It’s now time for me to test my assumptions by engaging with curious readers such as yourself. I am here to take consideration of your thoughts and reflect those into new content and template improvements (provide feedback here).
Bear with me as I improve my writing and educational skillset. Read through the posts and play around with the templates. Chat with me (via, comments, chat or email) to introduce yourself, tell me what you’re looking for, or how you feel about the idea of personal finance.
Disclaimer
Consider my content to be a collection of the things that I’ve learned tossed with the fundamental concepts generally agreed upon in the finance world, all packaged and delivered through a consistent medium.
Do NOT consider my content as personal financial advice, and seek help from an accredited professional when it’s time for you to make some legitimate financial decisions.
